SPRING 2023-Writing for The Science (ENG 21003)

The City College of New York

Professor: Brittany Zayas 02/09/2023

I am from Ecuador, and my first language is Spanish. I have been in the United States for four years, I’m currently studying Economics at The City College of New York division of The Colin Powell School. This course grabbed my attention because y would like to write and read documents from different genres like science. This is my first year at CCNY, my goals are to become a professional and create a great impact on others around me.I prefer to be calm and avoid locations with a lot of noise. I am a serious and calm young man, and my mother frequently commends me on my maturity for my age. I don’t have many friends and like to spend my time alone. I believe it is a result of not going out, and I dislike being in noisy areas. Something I appreciate about myself is that I like to talk to individuals I trust about things that happen in the world and how the world is continuously changing. I usually like to know what’s going on in the world, which is why I watch the news frequently. In my free time, I enjoy learning new things and learning more about the world around us. When it comes time to make a decision, I take the longest to come up with a satisfactory answer. Unfortunately, I always put things off till the last minute, and I’m like most people in that I don’t manage my time effectively because sometimes I plan how long it will take me to complete something, but it takes me much longer than I anticipated. Most of the time, I want to know the solution to practically anything, which is why I enjoy learning about new topics; however, it has been hard for me to do so in recent years due to the language’s difficulty in learning perfectly. When I do research on a topic, I like to start by reading the entire topic since it gives me an idea of what I’m going to investigate, and then I start reading again to better comprehend what I’m researching. And when someone asks me to explain this information, it is hard for me since I cannot clearly explain or teach something that I know. For example, when I was in school, some of my classmates asked me to help them with their

homework, but I found it difficult to explain and they did not understand what I was trying to communicate. Presenting and explaining material in a presentation is difficult for me, but I had the opportunity to practice in college and can still do it the way I want to. It is one of the things I want to improve while at CCNY, and I would also like to take advantage of all the opportunities that CCNY provides to students like me, but I would also like to meet more people and learn to be a better speaker, as well as learn more about the various ways to write and read articles of various genres, and I believe that I can learn these things in this class.
